There is no submission process and no dedicated markup for AI Overviews. Google states that no special structured data is required, and that optimising for AI search is still SEO. Inclusion appears to follow from being indexed, being clearly structured, and answering the question directly and verifiably.
No, and this is the most persistent myth in the category. Google has stated that no special structured data is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Anyone selling an “AI Overviews schema” package is selling something that does not exist.
Worth knowing alongside it: Google retired FAQ rich results in May 2026 and deprecated HowTo back in 2023. FAQPage markup is still worth shipping, because it is clean machine-readable structure and other engines parse it — just not because anyone promised you a rich result.
None of this is exotic and none of it is new. It is what good technical writing has always looked like; AI Overviews simply punish the absence of it more visibly than a blue link ever did.
Because an answered question generates no click. If your page ranked for informational queries that an Overview now satisfies outright, impressions can hold while clicks decline — the pattern that shows up as a mysterious drop with no ranking change.
Two responses, and they are complementary. Be the cited source rather than the tenth blue link, which preserves brand presence even without a click. And move effort toward queries where someone still needs to arrive on your site: comparisons, pricing, tools, anything with commercial intent.
Partially, and the trade-off is poor. The nosnippet and max-snippet directives limit what Google may display, and Google-Extended controls Gemini training separately from search. Blocking snippet display generally reduces your visibility in ordinary results too.
For most businesses this is not a good trade. Publishers with a licensing position may reasonably decide otherwise.
Almost everything about AI Overviews inclusion is inferred rather than documented. Google publishes very little, third-party studies disagree, and the system changes frequently. Any confident checklist — including the list above — should be read as informed inference.
The items we would defend hardest are the boring ones: be indexable, answer directly, and make claims that can be checked. Those hold regardless of how the system evolves.
Questions
No. Google states that no special structured data is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. FAQPage markup remains worth shipping as machine-readable structure, but Google retired FAQ rich results in May 2026.
Because an answered question produces no click. Impressions can hold while clicks decline, with no ranking change, which is why the drop often appears unexplained in analytics.
Partially, using nosnippet and max-snippet directives, and Google-Extended for Gemini training. Blocking snippet display usually reduces visibility in ordinary search results too, so the trade is poor for most businesses.
Being indexed, answering the question within the first 40-50 words of a section, using question-shaped headings, writing self-contained passages, making specific checkable claims, and keeping pages current.
Eight checks against your domain in about fifteen seconds. No email.
